Ciento and Cien

2009-04-05

Ciento is 100 in Spanish. However, in some contexts you use the form cien.
How do you know when to say ciento and when to say cien?

You say cien when 100 precedes a noun or a numeral larger than itself:

hay cien casas en esta calle (there are a hundred homes on this street), el concierto tuvo cien mil asistentes (the concert had a hundred thousand attendees).

If you are refering strictly to a number, like “on page 100 of this book”, use the form ciento: en p
